Facebook Ads vs Google Ads: Which One Should You Start With?

MOMT Team · September 9, 2026

The two platforms get compared on cost per click, which is close to the least useful basis for the decision. They are answers to different questions.

The actual difference: intent

Someone typing "emergency plumber near me" has a problem right now and a wallet out. Google Ads lets you buy that moment. The cost per click is higher and the conversion rate is higher, because you are paying to appear in front of demand that already exists.

Someone scrolling Instagram was not thinking about your product at all. Meta ads let you interrupt them persuasively enough to create the want. Cheaper clicks, lower conversion rate, and a much larger reachable audience — because you are not limited to the number of people searching.

So the first question is not "which is cheaper". It is: does anybody search for what I sell?

Start with Google when…

  • Your category has established search volume — services, repairs, legal, medical, B2B software, anything with a name people already use.

  • Purchases are urgent or problem-driven.

  • You have a small creative capability. Search ads are text; you do not need a video pipeline.

  • Your margins can absorb a higher cost per click in exchange for a better conversion rate.

Start with Meta when…

  • Your product is new, visual, or solves a problem people have not named yet.

  • Search volume for your category is genuinely thin.

  • The product demos well in motion — fashion, food, home, fitness, anything where seeing it is the pitch.

  • You can sustain creative production, because that is the whole game on Meta.

What each one costs you in ongoing effort

This is underrated and it decides whether an account stays healthy.

Google needs weekly search-term review: promoting what converts, adding negative keywords for what wastes money. Neglect it for a quarter and you will be paying for queries that were never going to buy. That maintenance is most of what Google Ads management actually consists of.

Meta needs a creative pipeline. Ads fatigue; a winning ad has a shelf life measured in weeks. If nobody is producing new creative, performance decays on a predictable curve. That production is most of what Meta ads management consists of.

Choose the channel whose maintenance burden you can actually sustain, not the one with the better case study.

Most businesses end up running both

Not because it is fashionable, but because they do different jobs: Meta generates awareness and fills the top of the funnel, Google captures the searches that awareness produces — including people searching your brand name because they saw you on Instagram. The mistake is splitting a small budget across both before either has cleared its learning threshold. Get one working, then add the second. That sequencing is the core of a full-funnel programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is cheaper?

Meta per click, Google per conversion, usually. The only number that settles it is your own cost per acquisition, which you cannot know until you have run both with working tracking.

Can I run both on a small budget?

Not well. Splitting a budget that was marginal for one channel leaves you under the learning threshold in two. Sequence them.

What about LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube?

LinkedIn for high-value B2B where the job title is the targeting. TikTok and YouTube behave like Meta — demand creation, creative-led. Worth adding once your first channel is profitable, not before.

How quickly will I know if it is working?

Google gives a readable signal in days. Meta needs one to two weeks to exit learning. Either way, judge on cost per acquisition against your margin, never on click-through rate. Tell us your numbers and we'll tell you which to start with.
