The Local SEO Checklist for Businesses That Sell in One City

MOMT Team · August 12, 2026

If everyone who can buy from you is within an hour's drive, most SEO advice is written for somebody else. Domain authority, national keyword volumes and link-building campaigns matter far less than a handful of unglamorous local signals. Here they are, in the order worth doing them.

1. Google Business Profile, properly filled in

This is the single highest-leverage asset in local search, and most businesses treat it as a one-time setup. Complete every field: primary and secondary categories, service areas, hours including holiday hours, attributes, services with descriptions and prices, and a real description. Add photos monthly — profiles with recent photos get more engagement, and engagement feeds ranking.

Categories do more work than anything else on the profile. Your primary category should be the thing you most want to be found for, not the broadest label that technically covers you.

2. Understand what you can and cannot influence

Map-pack results are decided on three things: proximity, relevance and prominence. Proximity is where the searcher is standing, and you cannot change it — which is why you will never rank in the map pack across a whole metro from one address, no matter what an agency promises. Relevance (categories, services, on-site content) and prominence (reviews, citations, links, mentions) are the two you can work on.

3. Reviews, continuously

Volume, recency and response rate all matter. Thirty reviews spread over a year beat thirty collected in one week, which looks exactly as engineered as it is. Build the ask into your delivery process — the moment a job is finished and the customer is pleased is the only time it works — and reply to every review, including the bad ones, in public and without defensiveness.

4. Fix your citations before building new ones

Inconsistent name, address and phone data across directories does not merely fail to help: it suppresses. Audit what already exists, correct the wrong entries, remove duplicates, and only then add the handful of directories that matter in your sector. Fifty citations with three variations of your phone number are worse than twelve that agree.

5. Location pages that deserve to exist

One page per place you genuinely serve, each with something specific on it: local projects, local staff, local pricing, the actual area covered, embedded directions. What does not work — and what Google has been explicit about — is twenty near-identical pages with the city name swapped. If you cannot write something true and different for a location, you do not need a page for it.

6. Local schema and on-page signals

Mark up the business with LocalBusiness or the right subtype, including address, geo-coordinates, opening hours and service area. Put the full address and phone number in the footer as text rather than inside an image, and make the phone number a tel: link — half your local traffic is on a phone and intends to call.

7. Then, and only then, the national stuff

Content, links and technical depth all still help. They just help less than a complete profile and a steady flow of reviews, and they cost considerably more. Do them in that order and the budget goes further. If you want the national programme as well, that is a monthly SEO retainer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does local SEO take?

Profile and citation work can move map-pack visibility inside four to eight weeks, which makes it unusually fast for SEO. Competitive city-wide terms in the organic results behave like normal SEO and take months.

Can I rank in a city I don't have an address in?

In the organic results, yes, with a genuine location page and local relevance. In the map pack, realistically no — proximity is doing too much of the work. Beware anyone selling otherwise.

Do service-area businesses need a physical address?

You need a verifiable address for Google, but you can hide it and show a service area instead. That is the correct setup for trades and mobile services.

Will you handle this for us?

Local SEO is included in our SEO services, and pairs well with Google Ads while the organic work builds. Tell us which city you want to own.
